Carl Levin
Senior U.S. Senator, Michigan

Time magazine recently named Michigan’s senior U.S. senator, Carl Levin, one of “America’s Top 10 Senators.” The publication noted that the Detroit native and Democrat “has gained respect from both parties for his attention to detail and deep knowledge of policy.”

Over his 30-plus years as senator, Levin has served in several top leadership roles. As chairman of the powerful Senate Armed Services Committee he has worked to reduce the proliferation of nuclear, chemical and biological weapons. He opposed the invasion of Iraq in 2003 and has authored several bipartisan proposals aimed at changing U.S. policy in Iraq.

On the domestic front, Levin as chairman of the Permanent Subcommittee on Investigations has focused attention on unfair credit card practices and sky-high oil and natural gas prices. He led Congress’ most in-depth examination of the collapse of Enron and introduced the “Close the Enron Loophole Act.”

He has also been instrumental as co-chair of the Senate Auto Caucus and the Senate Auto Parts Task Force in creating initiatives that help American manufacturers compete domestically and globally. And as co-chair of the Senate Great Lakes Task Force, he has led efforts to protect Michigan’s natural resources.

Levin’s visit to Southwestern Michigan will bring insights into the international and national issues that matter most locally.
