Stanley McChrystal
Former Commander of U.S. and International Forces in Afghanistan

General Stanley McChrystal, the former commander of the Joint Special Operations Command, which oversees the military’s most sensitive counter-terrorism units, retired from the U.S. military in August 2010. This four-star general is renowned for creating a revolution in warfare strategy that fused intelligence and operations. He oversaw the U.S. and international forces in Afghanistan (2009-2010). It was under his leadership that Saddam Hussein was captured in December 2003 and al-Qaeda leader Abu Musab al-Zarqawi was located and killed in June 2006.

A former Green Beret, Gen.McChrystal is the son and grandson of Army officers. He graduated from West Point in 1976 and two years later began training at the Special Forces School at Fort Bragg. During the Persian Gulf War, Gen. McChrystal served in a joint special operations task force and later commanded the 75th Ranger Regiment. In 1997 he completed a yearlong fellowship at John F. Kennedy School of Government, Harvard University, and in 2000 a yearlong fellowship at the Council on Foreign Relations.

He was appointed chief of staff of military operations in Afghanistan in 2002. Two years later he was chosen as the spokesman for nationally televised Pentagon briefings about military operations in Iraq.

Gen. McChrystal is known for his candor and innovative leadership. In his talk, he will cite stories from his career and educate us about the geopolitical realities of the troubled region of the world he knows so well.
