Robert Gates
Former U.S. Secretary of Defense

Dr. Robert Gates served as the United States’ 22nd Secretary of Defense (2006-2011). President Obama is the eighth president Gates has served in his career. Previously Gates was Secretary of Defense under George W. Bush, making him the only person in U.S. history to be asked to remain in that office by a newly elected president. Before becoming Secretary of Defense, Gates was president of Texas A&M University, the nation’s seventh-largest university (2002-2006).

Most of Gates' career, however, was spent with the Central Intelligence Agency (CIA) – 1966 to 1993. He served as Director of Central Intelligence (1991-1993) and is the only career officer in the CIA’s history to rise from entry-level employee to Director. During his CIA years, he spent nine years on the White House National Security Council, serving four presidents of both political parties.

His protection of U.S. citizens has earned him the National Security Medal, the Presidential Citizens Medal, the National Intelligence Distinguished Service Medal (twice) and the CIA’s highest award, the Distinguished Intelligence Medal (three times).

We welcome Dr. Gates’ reflections about the pressing issues that surround our nation’s defense and security.
