Bob Newhart Comedy Legend, Actor & Author
Bob Newhart has made the English-speaking world laugh for nearly a half-century. His trademark stammer, one-sided telephone conversations and historical “what if” routines resonate so well with Americans that his concerts still sell out across the country.
Newhart left an accounting career to win multiple Grammy awards in 1960 for his first comedy album, The Button-Down Mind of Bob Newhart. Since 1962, Newhart has appeared in 14 feature films, including Elf, In and Out and Catch 22, and has provided character voices for major animated films. His iconic television sitcom, The Bob Newhart Show (1972-1978), made him a household name and set the stage for a generation of TV shows. That show was followed by another classic television series, Newhart, which ran originally on CBS. His first book, I Shouldn’t Even Be Doing This, became a New York Times bestseller.
PBS recently saluted Newhart’s legendary career with an “American Masters” presentation. Most recently, he has continued his legacy by starring in TNT’s The Librarian: The Curse of the Judas Chalice with Noah Wyle and Jane Curtin.
Newhart will open our 2010-2011 series by sharing his humorous perspective of American life.
