Broadcast Journalist Ted Koppel to Address The Economic Club March 24 2011
BENTON HARBOR, Mich. — The Economic Club of Southwestern Michigan will convene for its spring session when it hosts broadcast journalist Ted Koppel March 24. The members-only meeting will be held at the Mendel Center for Arts and Technology, Lake Michigan College, Benton Township, Mich. Doors will open at 5 p.m. for Upton Hall members and at 6 p.m. for Mainstage Auditorium members.
Today, Koppel is a regular contributor to National Public Radio’s midday news and talk show, “Talk of the Nation,” where he enlightens thousands of people about topics and events that shape our world. Yet Koppel’s most notable accomplishment was serving as the nation’s longest-running daily news anchor on ABC News’ “Nightline.” His interviews and reporting touched every major news story from 1980 to 2005.
Koppel’s illustrious career spans political campaigns from Goldwater and Johnson in 1964 to McCain and Obama in 2008. He covered the march from Selma to Montgomery, Ala., and the release of Nelson Mandela from prison in Cape Town, South Africa. Koppel was with Richard Nixon on his historic visit to China in 1972, reported on more than 10 wars and covered past Economic Club guest Henry Kissinger’s Mideast diplomacy attempts.
He has won every major broadcasting industry honor for his reporting, including eight George Foster Peabody Awards, 10 Alfred I. duPont-Columbia Awards, 10 Overseas Press Club Awards and 41 Emmys.
A native of Lancashire, England, Koppel moved to the United States at age 13 with his parents. He became a U.S. citi
zen in 1963. During his visit to Southwestern Michigan, Koppel will engage his audience with his depth of knowledge about the events and people who have shaped the last half-century of history.
