Richard M. Daley
Former Mayor of Chicago
Time magazine described Richard Daley (Chicago’s mayor from 1989-2011) as “The Nation’s Top Urban Executive.” That recognition came in part because of Daley making it his top priority to pull together Chicagoans to “focus on what unites us” and challenging his constituents to put aside politics to solve the city’s problems. While mayor, Daley’s commitment to do more with less helped him cut more than $2.7 billion in spending. Other accomplishments include improving Chicagoans’ quality of life and public schools, diversifying of the city’s economy and helping Chicago become one of the most environmentally friendly cities in the world. His forward-looking policies have been emulated around the globe.
A former state senator and county prosecutor, Daley was elected mayor on April 4, 1989 to complete the term of the late Harold Washington. In 2004, he opened Millennium Park, the most ambitious public-private undertaking in Chicago’s history. He also oversaw the renovation of Navy Pier that is now Chicago’s most popular tourist destination. A project to modernize O’Hare International Airport, initiated under his leadership, is underway.
Daley’s passion for improving the “Windy City” no doubt will inspire members to see potential for changing their own communities.
